Terrible 2's...
Nov 21st, 2008, 4:38pm

My 2 year old daughter has started the drop to the stomach and fake cry routine when she doesn't get her way. I tend to leave her to finish her drama [and try not to laugh] and when she comes looking for me then we have a good conversation. This works well at home. Not so much in public. In public I cannot leave her so I try to talk to her while she is in her "episode". Again, this doesn't work so well. I have gotten a slap across the face... any advice on how to handle tantrums in public places?

The tantrum (in my opinion) was precipitated by something - whether a want or a demand - that is typically not rewarded. With my children, I would caution them ahead of time that if they "acted up" or didn't listen to Mommy, that we would leave the store.  I'd also reward them with something for being good - typically something like chocolate milk or cookies at home- nothing from take-away's or the store itself.
Most times this was enough of a deterrent that we didn't have any worries.  Sometimes, I had to leave the store/restaurant - a) to avoid the embarrassment b) to diffuse the situation and c) to follow through with my warning.
Going to the store on their schedule was also a better plan- when they had been fully rested, fed and contented - not due for a nap, grumpy or hungry.
(and then, there's always the leave 'em at home if it's an option).
Just know that every parent feels your pain and they suffer right along with you when your child is in full public display having a meltdown.
Just wait until the teenaged years - when they defy you and embarass you in public in ways that make the two's look positively charming!
Good luck!

Thanks for that. She normally is an angel but like everyone has her days. I noticed tonight in the store she was getting antsy - she didn't want to sit in the cart, didn't want to walk... just wanted to be carried. Not having a terribly stressful day, I bent down and started playing with her and then asked if she wanted to go pick out some flowers which made her very happy and all was good.

I've figured out most of the time she acts out is when I am stressed / not patient - you are definitely correct on the want - most of the time it is interaction.

It's funny - once you have a child you join the "I understand" club. I watch parents try to deal with tired, grumpy, tantrum children and often give the "i understand" look. Smiley

Welcome to the not-so-excusive club callled parenthood! hehe!
It's only with time and experience that you figure out all the things you could have/should have done...most of us old-timers just offer advice because we want you to avoid what we went through.
I too didn't have many issues with tantrums - and sometimes you can see in other parents that it's their short fuse and not the child - other times, for sure, it's a cranky todddler.
Oh the joys!
P.S.  This new topic is great!

Oh boy, at least I am not the only one that has the troubles of a 2 year old. Was I even like this when I was 2? If I were geez I feel bad for my parents. So, what is the best way to treat this? Be strict? Ignore it...
